Eligibility

This is a clinically and academically orientated paper that aims to up skill clinicians working in the broad field of mental health. This paper can be taken as part of the PGDipHealSc(Mental Health) or MHealSc(Mental Health).

Content

The course content is arranged around three main themes: Examination of common elements of psychotherapy; examination of specific models of psychotherapy, and the diverse settings in which psychotherapy is practised; the application of selected schools of psychotherapy to psychopathology.

On successful completion of this paper, students will:

  • Have a knowledge understanding of selected theories of psychotherapy
  • Have a working knowledge of the clinical issues in psychotherapy provision

Be knowledgeable about current research relating to the principles and practice of psychotherapy

Teaching Arrangements

Formal teaching sessions will be held on Tuesdays 2-5 pm at the Department of Psychological Medicine, Terrace House, Oxford Terrace.

For the purposes of class discussions held during this time, students will be expected to attend the advertised 'Tuesday Clinical Meeting' from 12.30-1.30pm during the semester.

Prescribed Texts

A variety of general texts relevant to the course can be located in the Canterbury Medical Library. Required readings will be supplied directly to the class.
