Eligibility

Suitable for appropriately qualified allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, osteopaths, nurses etc with prior experience in a related health area, and subject to the approval of the Academic Co-ordinator.

Content

The aim of this paper is to provide an understanding of the broad range of clinical techniques used for the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal pain. The paper is designed to complement MSMX 704 Pain and MSMX 711 Pain Assessment. An emphasis is placed on best practice principles for the clinician, and this includes the assessment of pain as a multidimensional problem, and the evaluation of outcomes. Current understanding of the best practice principles for the management and treatment of all forms of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, including modern psychosocial approaches to pain therapy.

MSMX 708 consists of eight modules, taught sequentially. Students must complete all modules:

  1. Pain assessment and outcome
  2. Treatment effects and placebo
  3. Opioids and L.A.
  4. Cognitive behavioural treatment - theoretical
  5. a) Clinical intervention – Clinical techniques
    b) Multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary treatment for chronic pain
  6. Primary and secondary analgesia
  7. Interventional pain management
  8. a) Neuromodulation
    b) Acupuncture

Each paper is subject to annual updating and revision. At the time of going to print, the above information is correct, but as a result of this updating, some changes could be made to individual modules.

Teaching Arrangements

Each module is accompanied by a one-hour audioconference session held fortnightly (Tuesday evening - 8.10pm - 9.00pm). There are 8 sessions for this paper.

There are no lectures; audioconferences are in a tutorial or seminar format. Students are provided with a comprehensive course workbook containing required readings, and are expected to be familiar with this material prior to the audioconference.

These audioconferences are complemented by the use of an interactive web based teaching tool - Blackboard- to which students will be required to have access. This will provide students with the opportunity to receive additional resources and also to take part in on-line assessments, quizzes, surveys, discussion boards, chat rooms, etc specific to each module. A c.d. containing Powerpoint presentations relating to the modules is also provided. Podcasts of each audioconference are also available for downloading.

Assessment

There will be continuous assessment during the semester, which could include a marked practical or applied project / case study and a final two hour written examination.
