Eligibility

Suitable for appropriately qualified allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, osteopaths, nurses, etc, with prior experience in a related health area, and subject to the approval of the Academic Co-ordinator.

Content

This paper covers clinical evaluation, assessment and management of a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. It focuses on a clinical approach to musculoskeletal problems as they present in primary care. The modules aim to provide a firm clinical science platform relevant to the practice of musculoskeletal medicine. While not completely exhaustive in its content, all the major diseases and disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system are covered in detail. The topics are well referenced and completely updated so providing the latest knowledge on each subject.

MSMX 703 consists of eight modules, taught sequentially. Students must complete all modules:

1. Principles of fracture assessment and management / management of wounds and soft tissues
2. Paget's disease / osteomalacia
3. Osteoporosis – epidemiology and risk factors / screening and management
4. Osteoarthritis
5. Rheumatoid Arthritis / Spondyloarthropathies
6. Gout and Pseudogout (Chondrocalcinosis)
   Polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis
7. Musculoskeletal tumours / Musculoskeletal infections
8. Musculoskeletal problems in childhood and adolescence
   Neuromuscular disorders

Each paper is subject to annual updating and revision. At the time of going to print, the above information is correct, but as a result of this updating, some changes could be made to individual modules.

Teaching Arrangements

Each module is accompanied by a one-hour audioconference session held fortnightly (Thursday evening - 9.10pm - 10.00pm). There are 8 sessions for this paper.

There are no lectures; audioconferences are in a tutorial or seminar format. Students are provided with a comprehensive course workbook containing required readings, and are expected to be familiar with this material prior to the audioconference.

The audioconferences are complemented by the use of an interactive web based teaching tool - Blackboard- to which students will be required to have access. This will provide students with the opportunity to receive additional resources and also to take part in on-line assessments, quizzes, surveys, discussion boards, chat rooms, etc specific to each module. Podcasts of each audioconference are also available for downloading.

Assessment

There will be continuous assessment during the semester, and a final 2 hour written exam.
