Eligibility

Suitable for graduates and health professionals of all disciplines interested in working with older people, in any setting.

Content

This paper explores the social, cultural and economic contexts of ageing, and ways of achieving independence for older people in New Zealand. Special reference will be made to issues in service delivery in the care of older people in the community, and to the interface between formal and informal care. Subject matter covered includes:

  • Social Theories and Models of Ageing - the cultural construction and images of ageing in comparative contexts.
  • Social Support - concepts and methods in comparative research, social networks and caring systems, formal and informal caregiving.
  • Normal ageing - independence and autonomy, successful ageing studies, retirement, end of life issues.
  • Services in community and residential settings - service models, quality management and service evaluation.
  • Resources for independence - policy, planning, design and practice issues.

Teaching Arrangements/Dates

The course is taught in Block mode, and is fully internally assessed.
Two block courses will be held in Christchurch each running Wednesday - Saturday. Dates to be advised.

Assessment

There will be 3 assignments (contributing 15%, 25% and 20%) and a project worth 40%.
