Canterbury Suicide Project - Introduction

The Canterbury Suicide Project

  • A research study of suicidal behaviour in people of all ages
  • Established in 1991
  • Located in the Department of Psychological Medicine
  • Part of the University of Otago, Christchurch

Major research interests include:

  • Suicidal behaviours (suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and completed suicide)
  • Youth suicide
  • (< 25 years)
  • Suicide in adults (ages 25-55)
  • Suicide in older adults (ages 55 and older)
  • Risk and protective factors in suicidal behaviour
  • Pathways to suicidal behaviour
  • Suicide prevention
  • The impact of bereavement by suicide on close family members
  • Longitudinal studies of people who have made suicide attempts
  • National suicide prevention strategies
  • Restriction of access to methods of suicide

The Canterbury Suicide Project is not a crisis or counselling service and we must refer you on.

  • Within New Zealand, check page 4 of your local telephone directory for listings of your local crisis centres, telephone helplines, and other personal help sources.
  • In an emergency, contact the Psychiatric Emergency Service at your local hospital’s Emergency Department.
  • Internationally, check your phone directoy for the listings of your local crisis centres and telephone helplines.
