Gene Structure and Function Laboratory - Welcome!

Research in the Gene Structure and Function Laboratory (GSFL) centers around the role of genetic variation in the development and treatment of disease. Our primary research efforts are currently in psychiatric genetics and pharmacogenomics (the impact of genetic variation on responses to drugs).

We collaborate widely. Our psychiatric genetics work is with Prof Peter Joyce and his research team in the Department of Psychological Medicine, with whom we currently hold an HRC Programme Grant. Our pharmacogenetics work is a core of the Carney Centre for Pharmacogenomics, of which A.Prof Kennedy is director, and this involves several investigators located in Christchurch and elsewhere.

Our expertise includes DNA banking, gene structure and expression analysis, polymorphism discovery and genotyping, DNA sequence analysis, tissue culture, proteomics, microarray analysis, and mammalian genetics.

We welcome enquiries from prospective PhD, MSc or BMedSci thesis students, and our lab is involved with the newly established BBiomedSci (Hons) course.
