We have an excellent series of display posters and are happy to participate in any
activity that promotes interest in respiratory diseases and respiratory research.
Community Activities
Asthma Management
Professor Ian Town has been a member of the Medical Advisory Panel of the Asthma
and Respiratory Foundation of New Zealand since 1997 and has been actively involved
in advocating for improved access to health care for people with asthma, and providing
leadership in the development of self-management resources. During 1998 he joined the
Asthma Working Group charged with reviewing all asthma education and self-management
resources used in New Zealand. From 1999 Ian took over as Chairman, and will report to
the HFA/Ministry of Health concerning future purchasing initiatives for asthma services.
The Asthma Working Group was responsible for the publication of the New Zealand Guidelines
for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult Asthma. Since 1999 Ian has held the position of
Medical Director of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation of New Zealand which is a busy
position with responsibility for all medical policies, review of all publications, advice
on training and administration of the annual Research round.
Dr Mike Epton acts as a Medical Advisor to the Asthma and Respiratory
Foundation of New Zealand, and both he and Dr Michael Hlavac contribute
to the Research Update section of the Foundation's quarterly Magazine.
Dr Mike Epton regularly contributes to educational activities in the
community, supporting the activities of Respiratory Educators and Pharmacists.
Air Pollution
Professor Ian Town has been an adviser to Environment Canterbury on the adverse
health effects of air pollution. He has been closely involved in the preparation
of technical reports, advising on policy for improving air quality and helping
with the education of Regional and City Councillors. In 1999 Ian was the
principal witness for the Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury)
at hearings to assess a proposed Coal Ban and the Council's Draft air plan.
Ian Town was the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Air Pollution
and Health Conference held in Christchurch 3-5 August 2000.
