Research Focus

The peptide laboratory consists of 2 senior scientists, a laboratory manager and 11 technical staff. The main focus of the laboratory is the development and maintenance of immunoassays (RIA and ELISA) for the measurement of cardiovascular peptides for clinical and physiological research. Hormones assays that have been developed within the laboratory include; atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), N-terminal BNP, c-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), neutral endopeptidase activity (NEP or E.C. 24.11), adrenomedullin, angiotensin II, angiotensin converting enzyme activity (ACE), plasma renin activity, arginine vasopressin, ACTH, cortisol, aldosterone, endothelin, cGMP, cAMP, and the catecholamines.

Most assays have been developed to detect the human and ovine forms of these hormones. In addition, HPLC technology is employed to assess the kinetics and mechanisms underlying the metabolism of peptides in plasma and tissue. The cell biology laboratory is studying the interactions of cardiovascular peptides in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells, particularly the effects on growth and second messenger generation.
