Email ruth.spearing@cdhb.govt.nz Dr Ruth Spearing qualified from Bristol University and then emigrated to New Zealand where she undertook her initial training in Haematology at Christchurch and Dunedin Hospitals prior to returning to the UK to complete Haematology Training. Following a period as Acting Director of the Canterbury and Westland Regional Blood Transfusion Service she was appointed Clinical and Laboratory Haematologist at Christchurch Hospital and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Christchurch School of Medicine. Ruth Spearing is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Pathology for the University of Otago Christchurch, a practising Consultant Haematologist at Canterbury Health Laboratories, and was Clinical Director of the Christchurch Haematology Unit from 1998-2005. She was Chairman of the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation for the period 1998-2000, and was a trustee until 2003. She chaired the Ceradase Treatment Panel from 1996-2000, and again from 2002. Dr Spearing is a past member of the New Zealand Haematology Advisory Committee, is presently Chair of the Information Technology subcommittee of the New Zealand Cancer Treatment Working Party, and is also a member of the associated high cost drugs and procedure committee. She is a past member of the Australia & New Zealand Child Cancer Study Group and Chair of the Canterbury Westland Child Cancer Foundation Health Professionals Group. As well as paediatric haematology, her special areas of clinical interest are bone marrow transplantation, haematological malignancies and the molecular biology of malignant disease.
