Peter attended medical school at Cambridge and Oxford universities. He trained in haematology in London - Hammersmith Hospital, Hospital For Sick Children, & Great Ormond St and in Auckland. Peter was a Medical Council Research Fellow at MRC Laboratories Cambridge, examining molecular genetics of cancer. He was consultant haematologist at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, then moved to Christchurch in 1999 as Clinical Senior Lecturer in Pathology for the University of Otago and Consultant Haematologist at Canterbury Health Laboratories. Since 2007 he has been full time in the latter role and was appointed Clinical Director of the Christchurch Haematology Service in 2008. Dr Ganly's expertise and interests include the diagnosis and management of malignant haematological diseases, stem cell transplantation and clinical research. He is the chairman of the South Island Haematopoietic Stem Cell transplant group. He is a member of the European and Australasian Haematology Societies, Australasian Lymphoma and Leukaemia Group, European Group for Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation.
