New professor for University of Otago, Christchurch19 December 2007 Associate Professor Kelvin Lynn has been promoted to Clinical Professor by the University of Otago along with four other members of the academic staff of the University. Professor Lynn has been a consultant Nephrologist at Christchurch Hospital since 1980 and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Otago, Christchurch since 1999. In announcing the promotions, Vice-Chancellor David Skegg said that the appointment as Professor reflected a scholar’s record of sustained excellence and outstanding leadership in research and teaching. “Otago has rigorous processes for conferring professorships which include a thorough evaluation of the candidate’s quality of teaching and research, as well as their service to the community and the University.” Professor Lynn is also the Medical Director of the New Zealand Kidney Foundation. He has recently relinquished his role as Chief of Medicine at Christchurch Hospital. He has an international reputation for his expertise in the treatment of kidney failure with home dialysis. Professor Lynn’s clinical and basic research has resulted in over 150 publications in academic and specialist journals. In particular, his careful clinical observations, together with the early application of computing to clinical practice, enabled the identification of the largest known family with inherited glomerulosclerosis, an important form of kidney disease. Collaboration with colleagues in the United States also led to the identification of the genetic basis for a unique kidney abnormality leading to proteinuria and kidney damage providing opportunities for new therapies for kidney disease.
