New health research funding announced

The Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Otago, has received nine new research funding grants to investigate a wide range of diseases and disorders.

The Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, which raises funds for local health research, has awarded a record $415,000 for the 2006 year.

Associate Professor Martin Kennedy from the Gene Structure and Function Research Group received $70,000 to assist with ongoing research into the response or resistance to antidepressants to help improve the targeting of drug therapies to the individual.

Dr Caroline Bell from the Department of Psychological Medicine has received $56,000 to compare a physiological treatment, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, with supportive therapy for anxiety.

Dr Lisa Stamp the Department of Medicine has received $61,000 to investigate the benefit of Allopurinal for gout by collating blood levels of this drug with its clinical effect.

Associate Professor Ann Richardson from Public Health and General Practice has received $30,000 to continue her investigation into links between viruses and breast cancer

Marcus Heitger from the Brain Research Group has received $59,000 to research mild closed head injury outcomes.

The National Heart Foundation has also granted $421,720 for three projects and a Fellowship researching heart disease and heart failure over the next three years. Dr Vicky Cameron, Dr Chris Pemberton and Dr Miriam Rademaker, and Dr John Irvine (Research Fellowship) all from the Christchurch Cardioendocrine Research Group are the recipients of the project grants.
