Medical scientist wins top international award

24th July 2006

Professor Steve Brennan from the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences has won the 'Outstanding Investigator Award' from the International Fibrinogen Research Society. Prof Brennan was presented with the award at the recent International Fibrinogen Workshop at the University of Surrey in the UK.

The award is presented every two years for sustained excellence in research on fibrinogen, a key molecule involved in blood clotting. It is the first time that this award has gone to someone outside the United States.

Prof Brennan, through the Pathology Department at the School, has been investigating the role that fibrinogen plays in conditions related to bleeding and diseases of the liver for over 12 years. In that time he has established an international reputation in the analysis and diagnosis of rare conditions involving fibrinogen, and has published many innovative papers on this protein.

Professor Brennan says he is delighted to receive the award as he knows personally most of the other recipients, who are researchers he respects in this developing area.
