Public Health - Doctoral ProgrammeIn 2010, eleven candidates are enrolled for a doctorate under the supervision of academic staff in public health. In many cases students have progressed through the post-graduate programme in public health to acquire the necessary background for doctoral study. Intending applicants for doctoral study need to demonstrate a facility for further study, develop a keen interest to progress to an advanced degree, and also identify a potential topic and supervisor in the Department. A Doctoral Committee oversees admission and requires a well structured proposal and a demonstration that the supervisory and other resources necessary for advanced study in the area have been clearly identified. Where full supervision cannot be provided in the Department, joint arrangements can be made with other Departments and, where necessary, also with other tertiary institutions in the Canterbury region. Financial support is generally not available. Study facilities - including a computer - will, however, normally be provided for doctoral candidates formally accepted into the programme. Application to the Doctoral Committee can be made at any time of year. Formal application for enrolment as a doctoral student at the University of Otago generally follows acceptance by the Doctoral Committee into the Departmental programme. See Student Info
