The library is the key provider of library and information services for Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Canterbury District Health Board. The University administers Canterbury Medical Library on behalf of the two organisations and costs are shared. Other health professionals who hold a current registration may be admitted to membership at the discretion of the Chief Librarian.

Initially established as a subscription library by general practitioners in 1934, the library is now housed within two floors of the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences building and incorporates the Mary Lambie Nursing Library Collection.
