She will review this common group of disorders and will discuss who to manage in primary care, how to manage them and who to refer on. Date: Tuesday 20th July “ Help! My baby has reflux” Maud Meates-Dennis, paediatrician, will discuss common feeding problems in babies. She will cover infant colic, gastro-oesophageal reflux and food allergies. Date: Thursday 22nd July Sudden unexpected death in infancy - “The Hidden Patient” Stephanie Cowan and David Smith of Change for our Children, will present an evidence update and prevention overview of sudden infant death and will discuss the role of the general practice team in its prevention. Change for our Children works for change that directly benefits children. They design and implement local solutions to issues that are of global concern, in particular preventable infant death, family smoking and parent education. Their initiatives include Smokechange, a smoke-free pregnancy service, and Safe Start, for promoting infant health and survival. They are the group behind the SIDS leaflets and the current safe sleep effort, working with an extensive network of others across New Zealand to protect babies as they sleep. Further information on Change for our Children is available at Date: Seminar Cancelled [Tuesday 27th July] Paediatric ENT problems Phil Bird, ENT surgeon, will discuss childhood middle ear disease, sensori-neural hearing loss, neonatal hearing screening and cochlear implantation Date: Tuesday 3rd August Women’s heath – chronic pelvic pain Helene MacNab, gynaecologist, will discuss the assessment and management of endometriosis and other causes of chronic pelvic pain. Date: Tuesday 10th August State of the (he)art – recent developments in cardiac imaging Ross Keenan, radiologist, and his cardiology and radiology colleagues at the Heart Vision group, will present the latest on cardiac CT imaging and discuss its indications, uses and limitations. Date: Thursday 19th August Living with osteoarthritis - practical tips and an introduction to the Arthritis Society Janet Tweedy, Arthritis Educator at the Arthritis Society, will discuss ways of helping patients with osteoarthritis, review sources of patient support and introduce the Arthritis Society. Date: Thursday 26th August Epilepsy management in primary care John Fink, neurologist, will review the GP’s role in epilepsy diagnosis and referral, and will discuss treatment monitoring, medication changes and withdrawal. Date: Tuesday 31st August Managing the menopause – an update Anna Fenton, endocrinologist, will discuss the management of menopausal symptoms and give an update on treatment safety. Date: Tuesday 7th September Acute arthritis Lisa Stamp, rheumatologist, will discuss management of the acutely inflamed joint. She will cover the initial diagnosis, investigation, referral and acute treatment, and the benefits of early introduction of disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) treatment. Date: Tuesday 14th September Irritable Bowel Syndrome - assessment and symptom management Judy Moore is a nurse specialist in irritable bowel syndrome at the Oxford Clinic where she has led the IBS service since 2005. She will cover the assessment and symptomatic management of IBS. Date: Tuesday 21st September Chronic pain - psychological and medical approaches to management This is a joint presentation by John Alchin, pain specialist and Mike McKinney, senior clinical psychologist from the Burwood Pain Clinic. They will discuss the management of this often difficult to treat area. Date: Tuesday 12th October

She will discuss the B4 school check and relevant aspects of child development. http://www.moh.govt.nz/b4schoolcheck Date: Thursday 21st October External ear problems - wax removal, otitis externa, foreign bodies and itchy ears Jane Rees is a registered nurse with extensive experience in ear problems. She runs an ear clinic using micro-suction technology and works with audiology clinics and clients with hearing difficulties. She will discuss safe, practical approaches to these common ear complaints. Date: Thursday 28th October Skin cancer update Martin Keefe, dermatologist and Jeremy Simcock, plastic surgeon will present this joint session. They will review the diagnosis and management of skin cancers and will discuss options for excisional and non-excisional management. Date: Thursday 4th November Bladder dysfunction in adults Gill Prior, continence advisor and physiotherapist with Nurse Maude will discuss the assessment and management of adult bladder problems. Date: Tuesday 9th November Assessment of acute abdominal pain John Frye, colorectal surgeon will discuss the assessment of acute abdominal pain in adults. Date: Tuesday 16th November Childhood orthopaedic problems John McKie, orthopaedic surgeon, will cover the assessment, referral and management of common childhood orthopaedic problems. John is happy to discuss any specific problems that attendees are interested in - please email suggestions to me at ben.hudson@otago.ac.nz and I will pass them on to him before the session. Date: Tuesday 23rd November Bowel dysfunction in adults Gill Prior, continence advisor and physiotherapist with Nurse Maude returns to discuss adult bowel dysfunction and its management.
